College Baseball: No. 23 AASU 7, Pfeiffer 4
SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball team finally got a mid-week game in after three straight weeks of rainouts and came up with a 7-4 win over Pfeiffer University on Tuesday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The Pirates (24-9), who had not played a midweek game since defeating Fairmont State on March 15, opened up quickly with four runs in the first three innings, highlighted by Brandon Nunez RBI triple in the second inning, to take a 4-0 lead going into the fourth.
Pfeiffer (18-28) fought back in the top of the fourth by plating three runs against AASU starter Thomas Ferrara (2-0). Blake Jordans RBI double and Bryan Braxtons RBI single in the frame brought the Falcons to within one, 4-3, but Brad Bohannon cut down Jordan at the plate from left field on Braxtons hit, then Ferrara struck out Patrick Hartis to end the threat.
AASU tacked on three runs in the fifth off of starter Chandler Chambers (0-3) as Adam Pelley doubled in a run and Miguel Donate singled in a run, plus a wild pitch put the score at 7-3. A Blake Jordan home run brought the Falcons to within three, but AASU closer Matt Nalutka picked up his seventh save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory. Ferrara picked up the win, pitching five innings and giving up five hits and three runs, while Chambers took the loss, giving up all seven runs and 11 hits in five innings pitched.
Pelleys two doubles and Sean Hotzaks three hits led the Pirates offensively on the day, while Pfeiffer was led by Braxtons three hits and Jordans two hits and two RBI.
The Pirates and the Falcons will play another game on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. to conclude the two-game midweek set.
