SAVANNAH, Ga. Righthanded pitcher and former Armstrong Atlantic State Pirate Adam Bernero was promoted to the Detroit Tigers and will join the major league club on Tuesday for the last month of the major league baseball season.
Bernero, who made his major league debut with the Tigers last season and became the first former AASU baseball player to reach the major leagues, was 6-11 with a 5.13 ERA for Triple-A Toledo in 2001 prior to his call-up. During last season, Bernero appeared in 11 games for the Tigers, going 0-1 with a 4.19 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched. His major league debut on August 1, 2000, capped a rapid ascent to the major leagues just 15 months after signing a free-agent contract with the Detroit Tigers following the completion of the 1999 AASU season. While with the Pirates, Bernero earned All-Peach Belt Conference and All-South Atlantic Region honors, going 11-3 with a 3.31 ERA in 1999 and helping AASU to an NCAA Division II Regional berth.
The Tigers travel to Chicago for a four-game set with the White Sox beginning Tuesday.
