AASU Golf Captures Flagler College Intercollegiate Title
Pirates Win By 15 Strokes To Capture First Tournament Since Reinstating The Sport

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Armstrong Atlantic State University shot a final-round 302 on Monday afternoon to capture the 2001 Flagler College Intercollegiate title, competed at the Ponce de Leon Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla.

The Pirates finished with a two-day total of 609, 33 strokes over par and 15 strokes ahead of runner-up Johnson and Wales, who shot 626 for the tournament. The win is the Pirates' first since AASU reinstated men's golf as an intercollegiate sport in 2000-2001 and came in their 13th tournament since resuming varsity competition.

Sophomore Thomas Whittaker paced the Pirates individually, shooting a second-round 74 en route to a second-place individual finish with a five-over-par 149 total. Whittaker finished two strokes behind medalist Ryan Cobb of Nova Southeastern, who shot a three-over-par 147. Freshman Jonathan Cox shot a second-round 77 and finished with a seven-over-par 151 total, while sophomore Clay Best shot a second-round 75 and finished with a 10-over-par 154 total. Freshman Ashley Loyd shot 76 in his second round and finished with an 11-over-par 155 score, while freshman Lee Clarke rounded out the Pirates' scoring with a second-round 80 en route to a 19-over-par 163 total.

The Pirates have completed their fall season and will be next in action on February 25-26, 2002, as AASU hosts the AASU/Southbridge Invitational at Southbridge Golf Club.
