Men's College Basketball: AASU 112, Clark Atlanta 65
SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State mens basketball team reached the century mark for the first time since the 1994-95 season with an 112-65 win over Clark Atlanta on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena.
The last time the Pirates (3-0) scored over 100 points came on Feb. 18, 1995, in a 101-85 road win over USC Spartanburg. The win makes tonight the first time the Pirates reach the century mark in Alumni Arena the home court that AASU moved into after the 1994-95 season. It is also the most points scored by an AASU mens basketball team since the Pirates defeated Troy State in the Coca-Cola Classic, 117-106, on December 5, 1992.
AASU jumped out to a quick 27-6 lead on the Panthers (0-3) in the first eight minutes of the ballgame and never looked back, racing to a 51-26 lead at halftime. The Pirates shot over 60 percent from the floor for the third straight game, hitting 43-of-70 shots from the floor (61.4 percent), and every Pirate player who got into the game scored at least three points. Senior Daryl Williams led a quintet of AASU players in double figures with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor. Senior Brian Bain added 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-5 three-point shots, while senior Tim Black recorded 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Sophomore Jerard Manning scored 11 points and freshman Nick Bloemhof added 10 points for the Pirates, while Clark Atlanta was led by Marques Jackson, who scored 14 points before fouling out of the game with 3:11 remaining. Paris Kirk added 12 points and Michael Moran added 11 for CAU.
The win was also the largest margin of victory (47 points) since the Pirates defeated Lander, 112-45, on Feb. 8, 1992, and also represented the largest margin of victory for the Pirates in Alumni Arena, breaking the 40-point win set on Dec. 2, 2000, in AASUs 90-50 win over Savannah State.
AASU will be next in action on Tuesday, November 25, against Fayetteville State at 8:00 p.m. at Alumni Arena. Clark Atlanta is next in action at the Xavier (La.) University Tournament on November 24-25 in New Orleans.
