Men's College Basketball: AASU 68, Fayetteville State 67

SAVANNAH, Ga. – George Bush’s block of Donell Williams’ jumper in the paint preserved a 68-67 men’s college basketball victory for Armstrong Atlantic State over visiting Fayetteville State on Tuesday evening at Alumni Arena.

The big defensive stand by the Pirates (4-0) – which came with five seconds remaining on the clock - paid off and insured that a career night from senior Daryl Williams would not go to waste. Williams’ three-pointer with 1:23 remaining gave the Pirates the 68-67 lead and capped off a career-high 33 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-3 three-pointers.

It was Williams dueling with the Broncos’ Kenny Haywood in the second half as Haywood led Fayetteville State (3-1) back from a five-point halftime deficit, 36-31, with 16 second-half points. The Broncos outscored the Pirates , 11-4, to start the second half and their lead was as many as six, 61-55, with 7:16 remaining. Williams and teammate Brian Bain took over, scoring the last 13 points of the contest and making the Pirates 4-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 season.

Bain added 16 poinrs for the Pirate,s while Haywood’s 18 points led a quartet of Bronco players in double figures for Fayetteville State. Tyreece Brown scored 12 points, while Donell Williams and Robert Ford each chipped in 11 points for the Broncos as well.

AASU will be next in action at the Neader Group Classic in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30. AASU faces Nova Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and host Eckerd at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
