Men's College Basketball: AASU 63, Elizabeth City State 62
SAVANNAH, Ga. Armstrong Atlantic State senior Travis Wallace grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the front end of a 1-and-1 to snap a 62-all tie, then the Pirates played solid defense forcing two missed shots as they took a 63-62 win over Elizabeth City State at Alumni Arena on Tuesday evening.
Junior Alex Carter, who led a quartet of players in double figures for the Pirates with 16 points, canned a three-pointer with 2:07 remaining to tie the game at 62-all. AASU forced a turnover with 55 seconds remaining, then Lorenzo Lawrence missed a 13-footer from the top of the key, but Wallace grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by ECSU's Tremayne Singletary, sending Wallace to the line.
Wallace made the front end, putting AASU up by one, then the Pirates forced two errant shots by the Vikings (3-2) in the last nine seconds, preserving the win and improving to 4-2 on the season.
Wallace finished the evening with 14 points, while sophomore Bryan Taylor chipped in 13 and freshman Jamaal Galloway added 10 points. Elizabeth City State was led by Devin Mooring, who hit 5-of-7 three-pointers en route to his game-high 17 points. Singletary added 12 points for the Vikings.
AASU won despite shooting just 32 percent from the field and watching ECSU shoot 51.3 percent from the field, including an impressive 52.9 from three-point range. The Pirates forced 21 turnovers by the Vikings, however, and dominated the offensive glass, picking up 16 offensive rebounds to the Vikings four.
AASU is next in action on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Mars Hill, while Elizabeth City State returns home to host the R.L. Vaughan Invitational on Dec. 3-4.
