Men’s Tennis: No. 5 Barry 6, No. 2 AASU 3

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Barry men's tennis team upset the second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates 6-3 in a neutral site match in Melbourne, Fla., on Sunday.

The Bucs (3-0) swept through the doubles. The Buc tandem of Thomas Hipp and Patrick Rittenauer, ranked number one in the country, held on for a 9-7 win over the fifth-ranked pair from Armstrong, Robert Jendelund and Taavo Roos at the top flight. The Bucs took the bottom two flights by identical 8-4 scores.

In singles, Hipp, Rittenauer and Dirk Benninghaus came away with wins as the teams split the six matches. Hipp prevailed 6-3, 6-3 over Davor Zink at number one and Rittenauer took number two 6-2, 6-4 over Paul Bishop. Benninghaus went three sets with Taavo Roos before coming away with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at number four.

The Pirates (3-1) took the final the points. Robert Jendelund defeated Roman Werschel 6-3, 6-4 at number three. David Secker topped Maunel Lauter 6-3,7-5 at number five and at the final flight, Kevin Sjimons defeated Martin Jensen 6-4, 6-3.

The undefeated Bucs will look to stay that way when they open Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Florida Southern at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
