SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No.
7-ranked Armstrong Atlantic men's tennis team advanced to the
NCAA's Round of 16 with a 5-0 win over No. 14-ranked Francis
Marion on Friday afternoon in the Mid-Atlantic Region
Championship match in Savannah.
The Pirates, who advanced to the NCAA DII semifinals last season, won all three doubles matches as Robert Jendelund and Taavo Roos defeated Kevin Taylor and David Budler, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. David Secker and Paul Bishop knocked off Franklyn Emmanuel and Dananjayama Mayadunne, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles while Cristian Easton and Davor Zink defeated Chatwinder Singh and Matthew Keth, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Secker then picked up a quick 6-1, 6-3 singles win over Mayadunne at No. 5 singles, then Easton closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Igor Prielozny at No. 6 singles. The teams had split the first sets in the remaining four matches.
AASU advances to the NCAA's Round of 16 for the second straight season and the 10th time in the Pirates' 14 postseason appearances. They will face West Florida, the defending DII men's champions, on Wednesday, May 10 in Kansas City, Mo. West Florida eliminated the Pirates, 5-1, in the semifinals of last year's NCAA DII Men's Tennis Championships, and the Argonauts won the earlier matchup between the two teams this season, 5-4, back on Feb. 25.
