FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5-7-05
2005 Mid-Atlantic Regional: No. 4 AASU 5, GC&SU 0
SAVANNAH, Ga. The No.
4-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men's tennis team will make its
first trip to the NCAA DII Men's Tennis National Championship
Round of 16 since 2000 after the Pirates downed GC&SU, 5-0,
on Saturday afternoon for the Mid-Atlantic Region Championship
AASU captured its 10th win in a row by sweeping all three doubles matches, then getting singles wins from Davor Zink, 6-4, 6-3 over Brandon Lee at No. 4 singles, and David Secker, 6-1, 6-0, over Mariano Cebrian at No. 6 singles. The win snaps a four-year region drought as the Pirates have been unable to advance out of the regionals since 2000, when the Pirates made it to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual NCAA National Champion Lander University.
The Pirates will now face Nebraska-Kearney, winners of their regional over St.Cloud State on Saturday, on Wednesday, May 11 in Altamonte Springs at a time to be determined. AASU has ended up in fourth place at the NCAA DII Men's Tennis Championships twice previously in the Pirates' best national finish.
