AASU's Williams Named PBAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
SAVANNAH, Ga. Senior righthander Joey Williams was named the Peach Belt Athletic Conference's first Pitcher of the Week honoree for the 2000 season on Tuesday afternoon by league officials.
Williams, who began the 2000 season by hurling 20 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, is 3-0 with an 0.40 ERA after picking up wins against St. Andrews, Mars Hill and No. 12-ranked Augusta State. The Metter, Ga., native hurled a complete-game five-hit shutout of Mars Hill on Feb. 13 and struck out 10 Jaguars batters en route to a 9-2 victory over Augusta State on Sunday.
The award is the second for Williams in his career last season he was named PBAC Pitcher of the Week on April 21 for his 4-0, complete-game no-hitter over USC Spartanburg.
The No. 11-ranked Pirates return to action this weekend with a three-game series against PBAC foe Lander University. The first game is Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1:00 p.m. and the final two games will be played in a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 12:30 p.m.
