Pirates Finish Third In PBC Commissioner's Cup Standings

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State finished third in the 2000-2001 Peach Belt Conference Commissioner's Cup standings for the second straight year, released by the PBC office on Thursday afternoon. The PBC Commissioner's Cup is given to the top overall sports program in the conference based on how each of the 12 schools finishes in conference play.

AASU 66.5 points of a possible 94, for a .707 percentage, behind Commissioner's Cup winner North Florida (.812) and runner-up Kennesaw State (.767). This year, Commissioner's Cup standings were determined on a percentage basis - the highest ratio of points earned to points possible.

The Pirates earned 12 points for finishing in first place in men's basketball, 10 points for finishing second in women's tennis and 10 points for finishing third in women's cross country. AASU also received 7.5 points for baseball (tied for fourth), 7 for softball (fifth), 5.5 for men's tennis (tied for fourth), 4.5 for women's basketball (tied for eighth) and 3 for men's golf (sixth). Points are given on the basis of the team's finish in the regular seasons standings, with the exception of cross country and golf, which are awarded based on the finishes by each school in the conference tournament.

North Florida captured the cup for the second straight year. The third-place finish by the Pirates is tied for the best finish ever for the AASU program. AASU has also finished third on four other occasions – in the 1993-94 year, when the PBC had nine schools; the 1994-95 year, when the PBC had 10 schools, the 1996-97 year, when the PBC had 11 schools, and last year.
