College Softball: AASU 5-3, Tusculum 4-7

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior Jeanna Short’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Tusculum in the first game of a collegiate doubleheader at the AASU Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. Tusculum used four first-inning runs in the nightcap to take the second game, 7-3.

Tusculum (5-3) went up quickly 4-0 in the first contest, scoring two runs in the second and third innings, but a solo home run by Deanna Beaty in the fourth and two more home runs – a solo shot by Adrian Tuttle and the three-run shot by Short – put the Pirates (7-3) up, 5-4, in the fifth inning. Tuttle then made the lead stand, hurling three innings of shutout ball to pick up her second win of the season, while Sarah Moder (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Pioneers, hurling two innings and giving up four runs.

In the second game, Jessica Taylor’s grand slam in the first inning off of AASU hurler Whitney Propes put the Pioneers up early, 4-0, and Monica Funigiello came in relief to hurl 4 2/3 innings of 2-run ball to give Tusculum the 7-3 win. First baseman Pam Jones added a two-run shot for the Pioneers in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-1, while the Pirates got solo home runs from Carrie Broome and Amber Hunt in a losing effort. Propes took the loss for the Pirates, giving up six hits and seven runs – six earned – in five innings pitched.

AASU returns to action on Sunday, February 20 as the Pirates travel to Catawba for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with the Indians.
