College Softball: AASU 3-13, Georgia Southwestern State 1-1 (5 inn.)
SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad picked up its second Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon, defeating league newcomer Georgia Southwestern State 3-1 and 13-1 at the AASU Softball Field.
The Pirates (6-2, 6-2 PBC) got an RBI double from Nicole Huddleston and a two-run home run from Kari Marsico in a three-run second inning to pick up the 3-1 win in game one. Jessica Waters (3-2) hurled the complete game for the Pirates, limiting the Hurricanes (6-14, 0-6 PBC) to one run on seven singles, giving up just one walk while striking out three. Amanda Hovett (1-4) took the loss for the Hurricanes, giving up eight hits and three runs in six innings.
In the second game, the Pirates busted out for four runs in the first inning and seven in the second inning to cruise to the 13-1 win. Ashley Bain delivered the big blow in the second game with a two-run home run in the second inning, while Nicole Huddleston (2-0) hurled two hitless innings, striking out two, to pick up the win for the Pirates. Brittany Milstead (2-3) took the loss for the Hurricanes, giving up five hits and eight runs four earned in 1 2/3 innings pitched.
Marsico finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI and the junior leads the club with five home runs through the Pirates’ first eight contests. Georgia Southwestern was led by Kassi Renau, who went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader.
The Pirates are next in action on Thursday, March 1, with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against Columbus State. Georgia Southwestern steps out of conference for its next action on Saturday, March 3, as the Hurricanes host Southern Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
