SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Presbyterian on Tuesday afternoon, taking game one, 10-0, in six innings while dropping the nightcap, 7-4.
The Pirates (15-6) took advantage of six Presbyterian errors in the first game to jump out to a 5-0 lead without recording a hit. AASU plated three runs in the third inning thanks to three Blue Hose errors, then scored twice more in the fifth inning on two bases-loaded walks. The Pirates finally found their hitting stroke in the sixth, scoring five runs to end the game with a 10-0 win the capper coming on pitcher Jessica Waters’ three-run home run. Waters (7-3) also fired a three-hit shutout to pick up the win, striking out five in her second shutout of the season. Mary Gordon (10-1) suffered her first loss of the season despite no-hitting the Pirates through four innings, giving up three unearned runs and striking out two.
In game two, Presbyterian (17-5) jumped all over AASU starter Pam Bykowski (2-1), scoring six runs in the first inning to build a 6-0 lead. Michelle Ramsden’s three-run home run chased Bykowski, and the Pirates brought in reliever Courtney Tucker, who limited the Blue Hose to just one run in 6 1/3 innings the rest of the way. AASU climbed back into the game with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by Natalie Vogler’s three-run home run, and Vogler was at the plate in the bottom of the seventh representing the tying run when her deep fly ball to left field was caught at the fence by Presbyterian’s Cari Clark to end the game. Paige Cassady (7-3) went 5 2/3 innings to get the win, despite giving up six hits and four runs while walking nine. Gordon came on in relief to hurl 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the save. AASU left 14 runners on base in game two, getting at least one runner on in each frame.
Jessica Peterka led the Blue Hose at the plate with four hits and three RBI in the doubleheader, while the Pirates were led by Waters’ four RBI in game one and Vogler’s two hits and three RBI in the doubleheader.
