College Softball: AASU 8, West Virginia State 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad opened action in the USC Upstate Fastpitch Classic with an 8-0 win over West Virginia State on Friday evening in the Pirates' only game of the day.
Heavy rains on Friday morning forced the alteration of the classic schedule and AASU will now play Queens, its other scheduled opponent for Friday, on Saturday evening at 6 p.m., after taking on Newberry at 10 a.m. and Tusculum at 2 p.m.
The Pirates (18-6) pounded out 10 hits and got a pinch-hit two-run home run from Amanda Baxter, which was more than enough for Jessica Waters, who hurled a four-hit shutout, striking out three to improve to 9-3 on the season. Kari Marsico went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Sara Morris went 2-for-4 with a double.
The win was the eighth for the Pirates in their last five games.
