FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3-7-06
College Softball: AASU 3-8, North Georgia 2-4
SAVANNAH, Ga. Jeana Short and
the Armstrong Atlantic softball squad gave head coach Ted Evans
his first Peach Belt Conference sweep as the Pirates defeated
North Georgia, 3-2 and 8-4, at the AASU Softball Field on Tuesday
afternoon.
The Pirates (11-7, 4-2 PBC) and starter Rachel Koening-Eng pitched in and out of trouble against the Saints (7-5, 1-3 PBC) in game one as North Georgia took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, and had bases loaded with nobody out in the first inning but did not score. AASU cut the gap to 2-1 on a Jeana Short solo home run in the fourth, then pushed across two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Bertram and an RBI single by Ashley Bain. North Georgia again loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, needing just one run to tie, but Koening-Eng induced a 1-2-3 double play ball by Meigan Grimm and then got Krista Bess to fly out to center to end the game. The Saints ended up leaving 14 runners on base in the game and Koening-Eng (6-3) got the win, giving up 10 hits and just two runs in seven innings while walking six. Dana Lowery took the loss for the Saints, giving up seven hits and three runs in six innings pitched.
AASU jumped ahead in game two by plating three runs in each of the first two innings, then freshman Pam Bykowski hurled five innings of one-run relief to pick up the win, 8-4. Short struck again with a solo home run for the Pirates, while Amber Hunt also delivered a two-run double and Veronica Castro had a three-hit game. Lynsey Thompson hit a solo home run for the Saints and Dainielle Rainey took the loss, giving up two hits and three runs one earned in 2/3 of an inning of work.
Short finished the doubleheader with a perfect five hits in five at-bats with three RBI and three runs scored. Brittany Cobb collected four hits on the day to lead the Saints, while Tootie Johnson and Lynsey Thompson each collected three hits.
AASU returns to action on Wednesday, March 8, as the Pirates host Tampa at 1:00 at the AASU Softball Field. North Georgia returns to action on March 14 against Chaminade in Hawaii.
