FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 4-22-06
2006 Peach Belt Conference Championships:
GC&SU 4, AASU 2
AASU 7, USC Upstate 3
AIKEN, S.C. The Armstrong Atlantic
State softball squad survived a rain-soaked Saturday at the Peach
Belt Conference Tournament, splitting two games to advance to
Sunday's final day of play in Aiken, S.C.
The Pirates (37-24) dropped their first game of the tournament to No. 2 seed GC&SU on Saturday, losing 4-2 thanks to five errors in the contest. Deanna Beaty continued her hot tournament with a two-run home run for the Pirates' only runs in the contest.
That set up a do-or-die game for the Pirates against USC Upstate, and once again the longball proved the difference as Amber Hunt launched a three-run home run and Beaty clubbed a two-run shot as the Pirates outlasted the Spartans, 7-3. Rachel Koening-Eng went the distance, giving up seven hits and just one earned run in the victory.
AASU will now face Lander at 11:00 a.m. in another elimination game on Sunday. For the Pirates to win the title, they will have to beat Lander, GC&SU and Columbus State twice.
