College Softball: AASU 3-2, GC&SU 2-5
SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with visiting GC&SU on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the AASU Softball Field. The Pirates took game one, 3-2, while the Bobcats won game two, 5-2.
AASU (19-14, 5-9 PBC) took a 3-0 lead in game one with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from Amber Hunt and Whitney Propes. The Bobcats (20-12, 9-5 PBC) entered the seventh inning trailing, 3-1, and cut the lead to just one on an RBI double by Heather Jones, but with the tying run on second, Propes got Casey Allen to ground out to shortstop to end the contest. Propes (6-5) scattered 12 hits and gave up two runs in seven innings to pick up the victory, while Jenna Kubesch (12-6) went six innings, giving up seven hits and three runs to take the loss for the Bobcats.
In the second game, AASU scratched across a single run in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single by Mandi Meador, a steal of second, a sacrifice bunt and an infield RBI single by Deanna Beaty, but the Bobcats struck back with three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Jones, to take the lead for good. GC&SU starter Brook Harrison (6-5) limited the Pirates to five hits and two runs to pick up the victory, then Kubesch hurled a scoreless seventh, striking out two to pick up her third save of the season. AASU starter Heater Woods (8-6) went the distance giving up six hits, five runs and eight walks in seven innings.
Hunt had three hits and two RBI to lead the Pirates offensively in the doubleheader, while Jeanna Short also collected three hits. GC&SU was led by Brianna Hope and Aundrea Baker, who each had four hits, and Jones, who drove in three runs with three hits, including two doubles.
Between games, the Pirates held a ceremony honoring their lone senior, first baseman Amanda Kort, who will leave the AASU program ranked in the top five in games played, walks and steals.
AASU returns to action on Tuesday, April 5, as they visit nationally-ranked Kennesaw State for a PBC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
