SAVANNAH, Ga. Keri McKee
and Cambria McKay hit back-to-back homers in the opener and Amy
Middleton's two-run double in the nightcap lifted Kennesaw State
to a, 7-1, 3-0, sweep of Armstrong Atlantic on Senior Day at the
Bobbie Bailey Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The Owls (41-6, 14-2 Peach Belt Conference) stayed in sole
possession of first place with the wins as Brittany Matthews
(19-2) and Janet Kearns (14-2) both tossed complete game wins.
Kennesaw State scored all of their runs in clusters, scoring
three times in the third inning and four in the fourth inning of
the opener. In the nightcap, the Owls scored three times in the
second inning.
KSU pounded out nine hits in the opener as McKee went 2-for-4
with three runs batted in. Senior Lori Cassell, who was honored
along with Middleton and Tara Hrycuik, went 1-for-3 with a
double, two runs scored and an RBI while Megan Gant added a pair
of singles.
Matthews scattered just three hits in the win. The southpaw
struck out seven batters and walked just one as she controlled
the Pirates all afternoon, facing just four batters over the
minimum.
In the nightcap, Kearns limited the Bucs to five hits and kept
AASU off balance with impressive pitch selection and a masterful
changeup. The Marietta, Georgia native struck out five of the
last seven batters she faced while pitching out of jams in both
the fifth and sixth innings.
Armstrong Atlantic (19-15, 5-10) received solid pitching in the
second game as starter Heather Woods allowed three unearned runs
on three hits in two and two-thirds innings of work. Adrian
Tuttle had an outstanding relief effort with three and two-thirds
innings of no-hit work.
The Owls will be back in action on Thursday evening when they
travel to Columbus, Georgia to play rival Columbus State. First
pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. AASU returns to action on
Saturday at USC Upstate at 2:00 p.m.
