College Softball: No. 7 Armstrong Atlantic State 0-2, GC&SU 2-1
SAVANNAH, Ga. Two doubles by senior second baseman Tesh Wiewel accounted for both AASU runs in the Pirates' 2-1 win over Georgia College & State, salvaging a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split with the Bobcats. GC&SU won the first game, 2-0.
The Pirates (21-9, 4-6 PBC) snapped their three-game losing streak with a solid performance in the second game. Junior All-America pitcher Annie Sells limited the Bobcats (16-16, 6-6 PBC) to just one run on three hits and struck out eight to improve to 10-5 on the season and snap her own personal three-game losing streak. Wiewel's one-out double in the first inning led to the Pirates' first run and her one-out double in the fifth inning drove home what would prove to be the winning run.
In the first game, Michelle Mayne (9-6) limited the host Pirate to just four hits in recording her third shutout of the season in GC&SU's 2-0 win. Rebecca Schweitzer's two-out double scored Nickie Black in the first inning and Mayne added an insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Julie King (11-4) took the loss for the Pirates, despite giving up just four hits and two runs one earned in seven innings pitched.
The Pirates next step out of conference for a non-league game on Sunday, April 8 against Georgia Southwestern at 1:00 p.m. at Pirate Field.
