College Softball: No. 2 AASU 8-4, Augusta State 0-3
SAVANNAH, Ga. Freshman Diana Corwin smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 3-all tie and lead the No. 2-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates to a 4-3 win and a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State in Peach Belt Conference softball action at Pirate Field on Monday afternoon.
Corwin led off the sixth inning with the home run to left field off of Augusta State starter Ashleigh Mast (8-3) to cap off a see-saw game. The Jaguars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Kristi Davis, but the Pirates struck back with two runs in the second inning, including sophomore Stacey Richardson's solo home run off the scoreboard in right center field. Augusta State pushed across a run in the top of the fifth when Ashley Aycock was hit by a Delaney Warrian pitch with the bases loaded, but the Pirates retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on senior Annie Sells' RBI single. A wild pitch scored a run for the Jaguars (30-13, 5-9 PBC) in the top of the sixth, tying the score at 3-all and setting the stage for Corwin's heroics. Corwin's home run made a winner out of Sells (16-2) in relief, as Sells gave up one hit and one run in two innings.
In game one, Sells hurled a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters in five innings, as the Pirates (30-3, 10-2) picked up the 8-0 win. AASU pounded out two hits and Sells launched a solo home run in the third inning. Heather Kershaw took the loss for the Jaguars in game one, allowing nine hits and eight runs - seven earned - in 4 1/3 innings of work.
AASU returns to action on Wednesday, April 10, as the Pirates host No. 12-ranked Kennesaw State in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
