College Softball: Kutztown 5-7, AASU 0-4
SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 10) Kutztown continued its successful run through the Peach Belt Conference with a college softball doubleheader sweep of host Armstrong Atlantic on Monday afternoon, winning 5-0 and 7-4 at the AASU Softball Field.
The Golden Bears (11-4) pounded out 16 hits in game one, while watching the Pirates (15-12) strand 13 runners on base in the 5-0 loss. With the Golden Bears leading, 3-0, in the third inning, the Pirates loaded the bases against starter Monica Glomb. Reliever Mary Hoch came in and induced a double play ball, then a foul out to get out of the inning unscathed. Hoch hurled five shutout innings, striking out three, to pick up the win while Jacquie Crane gave up all five runs four earned in seven innings to take the loss.
In game two, the Pirates again loaded the bases in the third inning and this time plated four runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Natalie Vogler and Ashley Bain, an RBI fielder’s choice by Jessica Strong and an RBI single by Erin Billingsley. The next half inning, however, an error by Bain at short opened the floodgates to five unearned runs as Kutztown retook the lead and went on to the 7-4 win. Katlin Arbogast went the distance for the win for Kutztown, giving up four runs and 10 hits in seven innings, while striking out six. Sam Floyd took the loss for the Pirates, giving up 13 hits and seven runs two earned while striking out two.
Kathy Gregg had five hits, including two doubles, while Ashley Fitzgerald had four hits with two doubles to lead the Kutztown hitting attack. Natalie Vogler had three hits, including a double, for the Pirates, while Erin Billingsley had three hits.
Kutztown has now played eight games against Peach Belt Conference schools and has picked up wins against five different teams after today’s doubleheader sweep. The Golden Bears will now head to the SCAD Spring Break Smash Hit tournament on Tuesday and take on Chowan and West Liberty on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. AASU will also be in action at the Smash Hit with games against Chowan and West Chester on Tuesday, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
