Day Two Complete Of ITA Men's Tennis Southeast Regional
SAVANNAH, Ga. After a brief afternoon rain delay, the second day of competition at the 2001 ITA Southeast Men's Tennis Regional completed with the top four singles and doubles seeds making it through the day's action to the quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Tobias Huning of VSU won two matches, defeating North Florida's John Bougon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, then defeating James Gorin of GC&SU, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. No. 2-seed Laszlo Leiter of Francis Marion defeated Augusta State's Zia Hai, 6-1, 6-3, and Lander's Patrick Suhrbier, 6-1, 6-1, to make it as well. No. 3-seed David Olave of North Florida also advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mikael Pettersson of GC&SU and a 6-4, 6-2 win over Peter Kreutzfeldt of Valdosta State, and No. 4 seed and defending regional champion Evgeni Mikheev advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Miguel Angelo Mariano of North Florida and a 6-2, 6-3 win over Atilla Azucki of Augusta. There were, however, several upsets in the lower seedings on the second day of the regional. All four 5-8 seeds were knocked off in the second and third rounds, including a 6-4, 6-4 win by AASU sophomore Roger Thiele over No. 5-8 seed Hagen Endler of North Florida, 6-4, 6-4, and a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win by Leonardo Sperry over No. 5-8 seed Marco Borges of Valdosta State. Thiele advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-6, 1-0, ret., win over teammate and No. 9-12 seed Leonardo Motta, and joins AASU freshman Dale White in the quarterfinals. White advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alessandro DeMarzo of USC Spartanburg and a 6-4, 7-6 win over Andreas von Michaelis of Valdosta State.
The top four doubles seeds had no problems advancing as well on day two. The top-seeded team of Mark Bube and Sollie Nortje of Francis Marion knocked off the team of Davies and Kreutzfeldt of Valdosta State, 8-6. The No. 2-seeded duo of Borges and Huning from Valdosta State also advanced with an 8-3 win over the GC&SU team of Beauregard and Pettersson. The No. 3-seeded duo of Mariano and Olave from North Florida knocked off teammates Dramou and McIntyre, 8-0, to advance, and the No. 4 seeds of Bougon and Endler, also from North Florida, defeated AASU's Roger Thiele and Dale White, 8-3, to advance.
Third-day action in the region begins on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and continues through Monday. The singles and doubles champions advance to the ITA Small College National Championships in Dallas, Texas, on October 19-21.
