Upsets Mark Third Day Of ITA Men's Tennis Southeast Regional

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The top singles and doubles seeds fell victim to upsets in the third day of action at the 2001 ITA Men's Tennis Southeast Regional at the AASU Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Top-seeded Tobias Huning of VSU advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw, defeating Jose Reyes of USC Spartanburg, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, but fell victim to No. 4 seed and defending Southeast Regional champion Evgeni Mikheev of Lander, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Mikheev's opponent in Monday morning's 10:00 a.m. singles final will be the No. 3 seed David Olave of North Florida, who defeated No. 2-seed Laszlo Leiter of Francis Marion, 6-0, 6-1, in the other semifinal match. Olave advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over AASU's Roger Thiele, while Leiter had advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over AASU's Dale White.

In doubles action, the unseeded Lander team of Mikheev and Patrick Suhrbier knocked off the No. 1 seeded duo of Mark Bube and Sollie Nortje of Francis Marion, 9-8 (7-3) in the first semifinal match. In the other semifinal match, the No. 2-seeded duo of Marco Borges and Tobias Huning of Valdosta State defeated the No. 3 seed team of Miguel Angelo Mariano and Olave of North Florida, 8-6, to advance to Monday afternoon's final.

The singles and doubles champions advance to the ITA Small College National Championships in Dallas, Texas, on October 19-21.
