Borges/Huning Capture Doubles Title For Valdosta State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – No. 4-seed and defending Southeast Region singles champion Evgeni Mikheev of Lander University successfully retained the region title with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 3-seeded David Olave of North Florida in the final day of the 2001 ITA Men's Tennis Southeast Regional at the AASU Tennis Complex.

Mikheev advances to the ITA Small College National Championships with the victory. Last year, Mikheev lost in the Division II finals to Radovan Chrz of West Florida after upsetting the top-seeded Jalal Chafai of Drury in the semifinals.

In doubles action, the No. 2-seeded duo of Marco Borges and Tobias Huning of Valdosta State defeated the unseeded team of Mikheev and Patrick Suhrbier from Lander, 8-6, to capture the region doubles championship. Borges won the title last year with David Olave, while Huning was on the region runner-up team last season at Lander.

The singles and doubles competition at the ITA Small College National Championships will take place on October 19-21 in Dallas, Texas.
