MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University tennis teams hoped it would be a day of upsets, but in the end, the higher ranked teams and players won as Armstrong Atlantic State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at the Centennial Center courts. The #13 ranked GC&SU women (11-6, 5-3 PBC) fell to the #1 ranked Pirates (14-2, 9-0 PBC) 9-0, while the #33 GC&SU men (7-8, 2-4 PBC) fell to the #19 Pirates (8-6, 4-2 PBC) in a tough 5-4 match.

The No. 19-ranked AASU men's squad dropped two of three doubles matches, but rebounded to win five of singles matches to improve to 6-3 on the season. Sophomore Roger Thiele picked up a No. 1 singles win over Fernando Gallegos, 6-4, 6-0, to lead the Pirates.

In the men’s match, AASU’s Achim Roth and Dale White defeated GC&SU’s James Gorin and Alex Beauregard 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, but the Bobcats picked up a pair of big wins in the other two matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The Bobcat duo of Thomas Karlsson and Mikael Pettersson defeated Roger Thiele and Peter Morsley 8-4 at No. 2, while Chris McConnachie and Per Schartum-Hansen defeated AASU’s Caue Figuieredo and Michael Jezt 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Gorin defeated Figuieredo 6-0;5-7;6-3 at No. 3, while Beauregard won his No. 6 match 7-5;6-2 over Morsley. The Pirates won at number one, four and five singles and all eyes turned to court one where GC&SU’s Mikael Pettersson and AASU’s Achim Roth split the first two sets and would have to decide the match in third set at No. 2 singles. Roth won the third set and the match 6-2;4-6;6-1.

In women’s play, the Bobcats looked to pull off an upset at No.1 doubles as GC&SU’s Julia Roudkovskaya and Annika Persson jumped out to a 6-3 lead over the #4 ranked AASU duo of Zsofia Golopencza and Michaela Kratochvilova, but the Pirates battled back to win the next five games to pull out the 8-6 victory. AASU’s Annamaria Forgacs and Laura Peaty defeated Karin Ramstrom and Jodie Lobsiger 8-1 at No.2, while Alejandra Aguilar and Laura Puch completed the doubles sweep for the Pirates at No. 3 with a 8-3 victory over Kremena Vassileva and Elizabeth Williams.

In singles play, GC&SU again seemed poised for an upset at No. 1 singles as Roudkovskaya, ranked #6 in NCAA Division II, took the first set from #1 ranked Golopencza 7-6, but the Pirate ace stormed back to take the next two sets 6-2;6-0 to win the match. The Bobcats lost all five remaining singles matches in straight sets in a 9-0 loss.
