AASU's Golopencza Earns Second PBC Tennis Player of the Week Honors
SAVANNAH, Ga. Armstrong Atlantic State sophomore women's tennis player Zsofi Golopencza was named the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week by conference officials on Tuesday afternoon for the second time this season.
Golopencza, the top-ranked singles player in Division II and part of the No. 4-ranked doubles duo in the nation, went 3-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles as the No. 1-ranked Lady Pirates improved to 16-2 on the season. The Budapest, Hungary, native defeated Diana Gherghi of top-ranked NAIA foe Auburn-Montgomery, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), on March 20, then knocked off No. 6-ranked Julia Roudkovskaya of GC&SU, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, on March 21. She also defeated No. 46 Claudia Schiffczyk of North Florida, 6-0, 6-1, on March 27.
In doubles action, Golopencza teamed with Michaela Kratochvilova to defeat Carolina Gago and Anca Iamandi of top-ranked NAIA Auburn-Montgomery, 8-2, then knocked off Julia Roudkovskaya and Annika Persson of GC&SU, 8-6, and Claudia Schiffczyk and Allison Davidson of North Florida, 8-1. Golopencza, who was the PBC women's tennis Player of the Week on March 6, is 16-1 in singles and 27-3 in doubles in dual match play this season.
The Peach Belt Conference initiated the Tennis Player of the Week awards in 2002 and will recognize the league's best players five times during the dual match season. Laszlo Leiter of Francis Marion was this week's PBC Player of the Week honoree.
The Lady Pirate tennis squad is next in action at the White Sands Invitational in Pensacola, Fla., from Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. AASU will face No. 2-ranked BYU-Hawaii in a showdown of the top two teams in the country on Friday, April 5 at Noon.
