Men's Tennis: No. 15 AASU 6, No. 12 Florida Gulf Coast 3
SAVANNAH, Ga. The No. 15-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State mens tennis team closed out the 2004 regular season with a 6-3 upset win over No. 12-ranked Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon at the AASU Tennis Complex.
The Pirates (15-10) won two of three doubles matches, then captured four of six singles matches to take the victory. Achim Roth and Dale White defeated the duo of Jose Pastrello and Seth Fogelman, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles. Roger Thiele and David Secker beat the team of Yuri Mantilla and Matt Graham, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Peter Dedik set the pace with a 6-2, 6-1 singles win over Pastrello at No. 2 singles. Dale White defeated Fogelman, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, while Jonas Askeland and David Secker also picked up singles wins.
Both AASU mens and womens tennis teams will learn of their NCAA Regionals fate this week as they endeavour to advance to their 10th straight NCAA Championships berth. The AASU women are in by virtue of their Peach Belt Conference title, while the men are currently ranked No. 3 in the Mid Atlantic Regional.
