Women's Tennis: No. 1 AASU 7, No. 5 Lynn 2
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic men's and women's tennis teams picked up a dual match sweep of visiting Lynn University in a matchup of top 10 teams at the AASU Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon. The top-ranked Lady Pirates won their 49th straight match with a 7-2 win over No. 5-ranked Lynn, while the No. 6-ranked Pirates picked up a 6-3 win over No. 5-ranked Lynn.
The AASU men won two of three doubles in its match with the Knights as Taavo Roos and Robert Jendelund, ranked No. 22 in the nation in doubles, upset the nation's second-ranked team of Jan Macko and Lorenzo Cava, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles. Paul Bishop and David Secker teamed to knock off Regnier Azevedo and Raphael Koehle, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
The Pirates then won four of six singles matches to clinch the victory. No. 8-ranked Davor Zink edged No. 5-ranked Cava, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, at No. 1 singles to pace the Pirates, while Roos, Secker and Kevin Sijmons also picked up singles wins.
The Lady Pirates won two of three doubles matches as Luisa Cowper and Iuliia Stupak picked up an 8-3 win over Dragana Ilic and Leigh Shelton at No. 1 doubles, then Johanna Dahlback and Dziyana Nazaruk edged Alejandra Boeker and Alexandra Schunck, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. Vici Weltz and Gedvile Norkute picked up a point for the Lady Knights with a 9-8 win over Manuela Emmrich and Caroline Grage at No. 2 doubles, fighting off two match points to take the tiebreaker, 8-6.
In singles, the Lady Pirates won five of six singles matches, all in straight sets, to clinch the match. Cowper, ranked No. 3 in singles, defeated No. 7-ranked Weltz, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while No. 5-ranked Stupak defeated No. 30-ranked Norkute, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Nazaruk, Emmrich and Grage also picked up singles wins for Armstrong Atlantic.
The Lady Pirates return to action on Friday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Clayton State in Morrow, Ga., while the AASU men travel to Clinton, S.C., for a 2:30 p.m. match against Presbyterian.
