2003 Mid-Atlantic Regional Final: No. 6 AASU 5, No. 9 North Florida 0
SAVANNAH, Ga. The No.
6-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State Lady Pirates are headed to the
NCAA Division II Women's Tennis finals for the ninth consecutive
season after defeating No. 9-ranked North Florida, 5-0, on Sunday
afternoon at the AASU Tennis Complex.
The Lady Pirates (21-6) won all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The No. 6-ranked doubles duo of Zsofi Golopencza and Laura Peaty knocked off Liliana Luin Hung and Camila Sagae, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Manuela Emmrich and Caroline Grage defeated Erika Hirth and Allison Davidson, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. Alejandra Aguilar and Gemma Vaughan completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Melody Le Goff and Julie Stoppelli at No. 3 doubles.
AASU then clinched the match with straight-set singles wins by Caroline Grage, 6-2, 6-1, over Erika Hirth at No. 4 singles and top-ranked Zsofi Golopencza, 6-2, 6-2, over Camila Sagae at No. 1 singles. North Florida finishes its season at 12-11.
The Lady Pirates will now advance to Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May 8-11 for the finals. AASU advanced to the NCAA DII Championship Final last season, its seventh finals appearance in school history, and lost to BYU-Hawaii, 5-1. BYU-Hawaii will be AASU's first-round opponent in the round of 16 at the Finals and the two teams played a close 5-4 match earlier this season in the White Sands Invitational in Pensacola, Fla., back on April 3.
