AASU Captures NCAA Women's Tennis South Region Championship
SAVANNAH, Ga. The No. 4-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team defeated No. 24-ranked Harding University, 5-1, to earn their seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championships.
No. 1-seeded AASU (21-5) won two of three doubles matches, as Zsofi Golopencza and Micheala Kratochvilova defeated Carolina Banuelos and Pernilla Axelsson, 8-2, and Alejandra Aguilar and Danijela Mijic defeated Daniela Corrales and Sarah Campbell, 8-4. Harding's doubles win came from Eva Axelsson and Laura Tollett, 8-6 over Laura Puch and Carolyn Ward. AASU then clinched the match with three singles wins from Golopencza, 6-1, 6-0 over Banuelos, Kratochvilova, 6-1, 6-1 over Pernilla Axelsson, and Aguilar, 6-2, 6-1 over Corrales. The Lady Pirates will now travel to Pensacola, Fla., on Thursday, May 10 for the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championships.
AASU advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Championships last season, snapping a string of five consecutive seasons of appearing in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship match. The Lady Pirates captured NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships in 1995 and 1996 and finished runner-up in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
