Top AASU Seeds Advance In Day Two Of ITA Southeast Regional
SAVANNAH, Ga. Host Armstrong Atlantic State boasts three of the four singles players remaining in the draw, including the top two seeds, after day two of the 2001 ITA Women's Tennis Southeast Regional at the AASU Tennis Complex on Sunday.
AASU sophomore and top seed Zsofi Golopencza advanced to the semifinals with 6-0, 6-0 wins over Fernanda Zurita of Clayton State and Jessica Spencer of Columbus State. Golopencza has not dropped a game in three singles matches so far in the tournament. No. 2 seed and AASU senior Michaela Kratochvilova also advanced to the semifinals by defeating Kamilla Rodriguez of Kennesaw State, 5-0, retired, and Ana Carias of Francis Marion, 6-1, 6-2.
Golopencza's opponent in the semifinals will be No. 4 seed Nathalia Collantes, who advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Christine Orban of UNC Pembroke and a 6-2, 7-6 win over Annika Persson of Georgia College & State. Kratochvilova's semifinal opponent is teammate and AASU freshman Annamaria Forgacs, who won 6-3, 6-0 over Natasha Stoop of Columbus State and 6-4, 6-1 over No. 3 seed Jackeline Nieto of Clayton State.
In the doubles bracket, the top two seeds will meet in Monday's final. The top-seeded duo of Kratochvilova and Golopencza advanced to the final with an 8-1 win over Quintal and Zurita from Clayton State and a 8-6 win over teammates Danijela Mijic and Laura Puch. The No. 2 seeded duo of Collantes and Nieto of Clayton State advanced to the final with 8-6 wins over Persson and Ramstrom of Georgia College & State and Forgacs and Alejandra Aguilar of AASU.
The semifinal singles matches begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday with the championship match taking place at 1:00 p.m. The doubles semifinals match will take place following the singles championship match and the singles and doubles winners will advance to the ITA National Championships in Dallas, Texas, on October 19-21.
