College Volleyball: Bary 3, AASU 1
SAVANNAH, Ga. Barry University took advantage of Armstrong Atlantic’s serving woes in picking up a 3-1 non-conference volleyball win over the Pirates on Senior Day at the ARC in Savannah on Sunday. Game scores were: 24-30, 30-20, 30-28, 31-29.
The Pirates (18-14) committed 16 service errors in four games and allowed the Bucs (14-11) eight service aces in the victory, the sixth straight by Barry in the series between the two teams.
Samara de Frietas led the way for the Bucs with 17 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while Lorine Durski chipped in 16 kills and a match-high 21 digs. Maria Romanowski tallied 53 assists for Barry, who heads into its final weekend of regular season play in the Sunshine State Conference.
Senior Leah Schmiedge led the host Pirates with 10 kills and eight blocks, while senior Adriana Miller added eight kills and 12 digs. Margaret Thornton tallied 18 assists as the Pirates notched 14 blocks in four games compared to the Bucs’ six blocks.
AASU honored its eight seniors in a ceremony before Sunday’s match Schmiedge, Miller, Stacy Yates, Rachel Falco, Nikki Ciapponi and Lauren Good all played in Sunday’s match, while Christina Flores and Traci Knuth could not play because of injury.
The Pirates will head to Florence, S.C., for the 2006 Peach Belt Conference Championships as the No. 3 seed. AASU will face No. 6-seed Lander on Friday, Nov. 3, at 3:00 p.m. in first-round action on the campus of Francis Marion University.
