Day One Results, 2004 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic
SAVANNAH, Ga. Like Hurricane Ivan, three Florida schools stormed the 2004 Chatham Orthopaedics Volleyball Classic on Friday, picking up two wins apiece in Day One of action at Armstrong Atlantic State University. No. 5-ranked Barry, No. 25-ranked Florida Southern and Florida Gulf Coast each went 2-0 in the days action, while the host Pirates split their two matches.
AASU improved to 10-0 with a win in its first match of the day, a 30-24, 30-13, 30-20 win over Saint Leo. Sophomore Christina Flores led all players with 13 kills and 13 digs in the match, which gave the Pirates their third-best start in school history. That perfect start would come to an end at the hand of No. 25-ranked Florida Southern, however, as the Mocs handed the Pirates their first defeat of the season in four games, 36-34, 31-29, 19-30, 30-26, behind 20 kills and 20 digs from Britany Stasis. Freshman Rindy Vidovich led the Pirates with a season-high 16 kills while sophomore Traci Knuth added 15 kills and Flores added 21 digs.
The Mocs also picked up a hard-fought five-game win over Florida Southern, 30-24, 26-30, 30-16, 28-30, 15-9, to improve to 10-1 on the season.
The No. 5-ranked Barry Bucs barely broke a sweat by knocking off USC Upstate in three, 30-19, 30-27, 30-21, and Wingate in three, 30-22, 30-16, 30-18, to go 2-0 on the day. Karla Bersano led the Bucs with 15 kills in each match.
Florida Gulf Coast is now the only team left without a blemish in 2004 in the field as they went 2-0 to improve to 6-0 on the season. The inaugural Eagles knocked off Wingate in five, 30-24, 27-30, 26-30, 30-28, 15-13, and Presbyterian in four, 30-28, 28-30, 30-21, 30-22.
Other action on day one saw Presbyterian upend Rollins in five games behind Donja Bobbitts 19 kills; USC Upstate defeated Rollins in five games and Saint Leo upended Augusta State in three.
