Day Two Results, 2003 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Only one team emerged from the 2004 AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics Volleyball Classic unscathed after Saturday’s action, and it was No. 5-ranked Barry University. The Bucs were the only team to go 4-0 on the weekend with two wins on Saturday, while the host Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates split two matches, including handing Florida Gulf Coast its first-ever volleyball loss.

AASU (11-2) defeated Florida Gulf Coast, an inaugural program, in four games on Saturday afternoon, 25-30, 31-29, 30-27, 30-20. Sophomore Christina Flores led a quartet of AASU players in double-digit kills with 17, while sophomore Traci Knuth added 16 kills and hit .481. Knuth and senior Ashley Lavender collected 15 digs each, while freshman Margaret Thornton added 36 assists. FGCU (6-1) also placed four players in double figure kills, led by Kristy Hartley’s 15.

The Pirates then faced off against the No. 5-ranked Bucs and took the first game from Barry, 31-29, but Barry stormed back to take the next three games, 30-21, 30-26, 30-15, and take the match. Fernanda Brino and Karla Bersano each had 20 kills in the match to lead the Bucs, while AASU was led by Flores’ 10 kills. Michele Rosamiglia tallied 65 assists for Barry, while Thornton and fellow freshman Karla Readshaw each tallied 19 assists to lead AASU.

Barry also knocked off Augusta Statte in three games to finish the tournament 4-0.

Rollins rebounded from a tough Friday to take two matches on Saturday, knocking off Wingate in four games and coming from 2-0 down to defeat Francis Marion, 3-2. USC Upstate pulled off an upset of No. 25-ranked Florida Southern in four games, while Presbyterian defeated Saint Leo in three games. Rounding out the other action, Florida Southern defeated Wingate in three games, Francis Marion picked up a 3-0 win over Saint Leo and Florida Gulf Coast defeated Augusta State in three.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday, September 18, as they travel to Hartsville, S.C., to face Converse and Coker in a doubleheader, beginning at Noon.
