Day One Results, 2003 Chatham Orthopaedics
Pirate Volleyball Classic
No. 3 Tampa, host AASU and Florida Tech each win two
matches
SAVANNAH, Ga. Host AASU, Florida Tech and No. 3-ranked Tampa each won two matches on Friday of the 2003 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic on Friday, wrapping up the first day of action at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
The host Pirates won their first match of the day, outlasting Presbyterian in five games, 30-24, 25-30, 30-18, 21-30, 15-8. Nine players in the match recorded double-figures in kills, and the Pirates served a season-high 16 aces and blocked 20 balls. In their second match of the day, the Pirates again had to go five games to defeat Florida Southern, winning 30-26, 30-25, 28-30, 27-30, 15-11. AASU got a triple-double from junior Candice Modlinski with 10 kills, 12 digs and 10 blocks, while junior Darcey Krug added 17 kills and freshman setter Kelly Asbury tallied 63 assists.
No. 3-ranked Tampa rolled over Wingate, 3-0, and
then downed No. 19 Rockhurst in a tight four-game match, 28-30,
33-31, 30-24, 33-31, to improve to 8-1.
Florida Tech came from two games down to win a thrilling
five-game match against Catawba, then knocked off Francis Marion
3-0 to improve to 3-6 on the young season.
In other tournament action, Wingate defeated Francis Marion, 3-0; USC Spartanburg defeated Rollins, 3-1; Florida Southern defeated Augusta State, 3-0; Rollins defeated Catawba 3-2 and Presbyterian defeated Augusta State, 3-1.
Action in the 2003 Chatham Orthopaedic Pirate Volleyball Classic concludes on Saturday with matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. Host AASU plays at 1:00 p.m. against Catawba and at 7:00 p.m. against No. 3-ranked Tampa.
