Day One Recap: 2002 AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics VB Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Catawba, Lewis, Rollins, Florida Tech and host Armstrong Atlantic State each picked up two wins after the first day of the 2002 AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics Volleyball Classic on Friday at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The host Pirates remained undefeated for 2002 with a 3-0 win over Tusculum and a 3-1 win over Florida Southern on Friday. Shelley Weekes' 19 kills led the Pirates (11-0) past Florida Southern, while the Pirates hit .400 as a team in downing Tusculum.

Catawba's two wins on the day were each marathon five-game matches, but the Indians downed USC Aiken and Francis Marion each by 3-2 scores. The Indians (7-1) were led by Hope Miller's 15 kills against USC Aiken and Elizabeth Hewett's 14 blocks against Francis Marion.

Rollins defeated USC Spartanburg 3-0 and Tusculum 3-0 to improve to 5-5 on the season, while Lewis also remained undefeated with two wins, defeating USC Aiken 3-0 and Presbyterian 3-0 to improve to 9-0 on the season. Florida Tech also picked up two wins, defeating Presbyterian 3-0 and USC Spartanburg 3-0.

In other action, Florida Southern defeated Francis Marion 3-1 to earn a split in the day's action.

Saturday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. with Tusculum taking on USC Spartanburg and USC Aiken meeting Florida Tech. The host Pirates face Catawba at 11:30 a.m., then close out the Classic with a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Lewis.
