Day Two Results, 2003 Chatham Orthopaedics
Pirate Volleyball Classic
No. 3 Tampa Finishes 4-0; Host AASU, No. 19 Rockhurst
and Fla. Tech Finish 3-1
SAVANNAH, Ga. - No. 3-ranked Tampa was the last team standing undefeated after the second day of the 2003 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic on Saturday, wrapping up the tournament with a 4-0 record after a 30-25, 30-19, 30-21 win over host Armstrong Atlantic State.
AASU finished the tournament with a 3-1 record after recording a 3-0 win over Catawaba in Saturdays first match. Alexia Piche-Hatch (15 kills, 16 digs) and Ashley Lavender (14 kills, 16 digs) each recorded double-doubles as the Pirates won their fifth match in a row. Tampa then knocked off the host Pirates in three as the Spartans hit .353 and used 16 kills and 15 digs from Ania Ruiz and an amazing .700 performance (14/0-20) from Ericka Womack to win.
In addition to defeating the host Pirates, No. 3-ranked Tampa knocked off Augusta State, 3-0, to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Florida Tech also finished the tournament 3-1 after defeating Wingate, 3-1, behind 20 kills from Natalia Acevedo, but dropping a 3-1 decision to USC Spartanburg. Rockhurst joined FIT at 3-1 for the tournament with two wins on Saturday, sweeping Francis Marion, 3-0, and downing Florida Southern, 3-0.
In other tournament action, Presbyterian defeated Rollins, 3-1; Florida Southern defeated USC Spartanburg, 3-1; Wingate defeated Rollins, 3-2; Catawba defeated Augusta State, 3-1, and Francis Marion knocked off Presbyterian, 3-2.
AASU returns to action on Friday, September 19, as the Pirates travel to Barry University to play the No. 6-ranked Bucs at 8:00 p.m.
