AASU Downs No. 15 Barry To Conclude First Day Action At Pirate Classic
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman Lindsay Ehlers had 20 kills and senior Micah Roman recorded 31 digs as the AASU Pirates defeated No. 15-ranked Barry University, 3-1, to conclude the first day of action at the 2000 AASU Pirate Volleyball Classic.
The Pirates (8-1) dropped the first game to the Bucs (4-4) 15-9, but rallied to win the next three, 16-14, 15-13, 15-11. Sophomore Erin Melius recorded 50 assists for AASU, while the Bucs were led by 17 kills apiece by Rochelle Magill and Jade Harper.
Presbyterian kicked off the day's action with a 15-13, 7-15, 15-13, 15-4 win over West Georgia. No. 6-ranked University of Tampa won their only match of the day, defeating Lewis, 16-14, 15-13, 15-6. USC Spartanburg took a pair of matches, defeating West Georgia, 15-10, 15-4, 3-15, 18-16 and West Alabama, 19-17, 15-10, 15-1.
Montevallo also won two matches, defeating Florida Tech, 15-6, 9-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11 and Presbyterian, 15-5, 6-15, 15-3, 15-3. Florida Tech defeated West Alabama earlier in the day, 15-4, 15-9, 15-8 and Wingate was a winner in its only match of the day, defeating Francis Marion 15-5, 16-14, 15-5.
The rest of Day 1 action saw Lewis defeat Saint Leo, 15-7, 15-4, 15-9 and Francis Marion defeat Saint Leo, 15-12, 8-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-13.
Tomorrow, action begins at 9 a.m. with two matches at the Sports Center as Francis Marion faces Montevallo and Saint Leo faces West Alabama. AASU is in action at Noon against West Georgia, then faces No. 6 Tampa at 7:30 p.m.
