Day One: 2006 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate
Volleyball Classic
SAVANNAH, Ga. – It’s good to be
nationally ranked as the competing teams in the 2006 Chatham
Orthopedics Pirate Volleyball Classic learned after the first day
of action on Friday with all three teams that appear in this
week’s CSTV/AVCA DII Top 25 going 2-0 on the day.
The top-ranked University of Tampa – the first collegiate No. 1-ranked team to compete in Savannah volleyball history – breezed to two wins on Friday, knocking off Wingate 3-0 and handing USC Upstate its first loss of the season with a 3-0 win. The Spartans are now 10-0 heading into Saturday’s matchups. Fellow Sunshine State Conference school and No. 6-ranked Florida Southern had slightly more trouble but prevailed, 3-1, over USC Aiken and 3-0 over host Armstrong Atlantic State. No. 19-ranked Florida Gulf Coast completed the perfect day for ranked clubs by knocking off Lenoir-Rhyne and Eckerd by 3-0 scores.
The host Pirates found success earlier in the day by snapping a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Presbyterian to go 1-1 in the first day. The only other team to go 2-0 on the day was Rollins, who beat UNC Pembroke, 3-1, then survived Presbyterian to win, 3-2.
Other winners in day one included Eckerd, a 3-0 winner over UNC Pembroke; Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, a 3-0 winner over Catawba; Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Francis Marion, 3-2; USC Upstate defeated Florida Tech, 3-2; Wingate defeated Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, 3-1; Francis Marion defeated Florida Tech, 3-1, and USC Aiken knocked off Catawba, 3-0.
Action in the Classic concludes on Saturday with
matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. AASU takes on Lenoir-Rhyne at 1:00
p.m. and finishes the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. tilt against
No. 1-ranked Tampa.
