Day Two Recap: 2007 Chatham Orthopedics Volleyball Classic
SAVANNAH, Ga. Day two of the 2007 Chatham Orthopedics Volleyball Classic featured an almost repeat performance of day one as three teams Northwood (Mich.), Catawba and Florida Tech won twice to finish tournament action with perfect 4-0 records.The Timberwolves of Northwood (12-0) matched their overall record by winning all four matches this weekend by 3-0 margins, not dropping a game. Saturday, they defeated Francis Marion, 30-17, 30-27, 30-19, then knocked off the host Pirates, 30-19, 30-27, 30-18. Lana Sorokina led a balanced attack against AASU with 10 kills, while Aleksandra Stoletova and Gordana Barac each added nine kills.
Florida Tech (11-0) also finished the weekend with its undefeated record intact by winning twice on Saturday. The Panthers knocked off the host Pirates in the first match of the day, 30-24, 30-25, 30-20, behind Maybe Pegorari’s 10 kills, then capped the weekend with a 30-12, 30-27, 30-18 win over Coker.
Catawba improved to 11-1 on the season, but had to work the hardest of the three 4-0 teams this weekend. The Indians won in four against Francis Marion to start the day, 30-24, 26-30, 30-27, 30-25, then had a gritty three-game win over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, 32-30, 30-22, 32-30. Melissa Powers continued to live up to her name by notching 20 kills in each match for Catwaba.
UNC Pembroke rounded out the tournament action on Saturday by splitting two matches, defeating Coker in four games, 30-17, 28-30, 30-14, 30-20, but falling to Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in three games, 30-14, 30-22, 30-26.
Armstrong Atlantic State will return to action on Tuesday, September 11, as the Pirates host West Georgia at 7:00 p.m. at the Aquatics & Recreation Center.
