Day Two: 2006 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – All three nationally-ranked clubs finished the 2006 Chatham Orthopedics Pirate Volleyball Classic with undefeated records after Saturday’s concluding day in action at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Top-ranked Tampa picked up two more wins by 3-0 margins to run its record to 12-0, its best start since 1988. The Spartans defeated Catawba and host Armstrong Atlantic to finish the weekend with a 4-0 mark, joining fellow Sunshine State Conference school and No. 6-ranked Florida Southern. The Mocs had to work a little harder for their 4-0 mark, however, as they were taken to the brink by Wingate in a 3-2 match and knocked off Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1. No. 19-ranked Florida Gulf Coast also went 4-0 with 3-0 wins over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and Wingate.

The host Pirates finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark as earlier on Saturday, they rebounded to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1. One bright spot for the Pirates over the weekend came from senior Christina Flores, who became AASU’s all-time digs leader. The Addison, Ill., native has 1,364 digs in her career, passing Tracy Fowler for the Pirate lead.

Other winners in day two included: USC Aiken, who won 3-1 over Presbyterian and 3-0 over Florida Tech; Catawba, who defeated UNC Pembroke 3-1; Rollins, who defeated USC Upstate 3-1; Francis Marion, who knocked off Rollins in the day’s longest match, 3-2 (19-17 in game five); Eckerd, a 3-0 winner over Presbyterian; Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, who defeated USC Upstate, 3-0; and UNC Pembroke, who knocked off Florida Tech, 3-0.
