Armstrong Atlantic State knocked off its first ranked road
opponent in nearly two years on Saturday, defeating No. 19-ranked
Carson-Newman, 72-61, at the Eagle Club Classic in Jefferson
City, Tenn.
The Pirates' last road win over a ranked squad came on January 7, 2004, when the AASU defeated No. 16 GC&SU, 78-67.
The Lady Eagles (2-1) opened up the contest with a 15-14 lead, but a 19-4 run by the Lady Pirates (2-0) propelled AASU to a 36-20 halftime lead. The Lady Pirates held the Lady Eagles to just seven field goals from the floor in the first half, while hitting 50% of their own shots (14-of-28) from the floor. Ne'Keithia "Peaches" Howard led the Pirates at the break with eight points.
Carson-Newman outscored the Lady Pirates to begin the second half, 22-7, to close the lead to within one, 43-42, but AASU answered back with a 13-3 run of their own to take a 56-44 lead with 9:32 left in the contest.
Alicia Durham led all scorers for the Lady Pirates with 20 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists, while Howard finished the evening with 14 points and seven rebounds. Amanda Ray led the Lady Eagles with a double-double, collecting 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Pirates return to action on Tuesday, September 22, as they visit Valdosta State for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Blazers.
