Women's College Basketball: AASU 71, Northwood (Mich.) 59
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Freshman Lindsay Holmes two first-half three-pointers, then junior Audosha Kelleys 12 second-half points helped lift Armstrong Atlantic State to a 71-59 win over visiting Northwood (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
The Lady Pirates (2-2) struggled at the outset of the contest, hitting just four of their first 16 shots from the floor as they trailed the Timberwolves (0-1) by three, 18-15, with 7:56 remaining in the first half. AASU then went on a 12-2 run, highlighted by Holmes two three-pointers, to take a 25-20 lead and eventually go up by seven, 36-29, at halftime.
After intermission, the Lady Pirates then went to leading scorer Audosha Kelley. Held to just two points at halftime, Kelley hit five-of-seven shots from the floor in scoring 12 points after the break and helping AASU jump out to a big second-half lead. The Lady Pirates led by 22 points, 65-43, with 5:43 remaining when Northwood edged closer behind Anna Trim. Trim scored 12 of her 14 points in the final five minutes as the Timberwolves got it as close as 10 points at the end.
Each team placed three players in double figures. Kelley led the Pirates with 14, while forwards Veronica Campbell and Ashley Mason each contributed 10 points off the bench. Trim and Payge Salquist each scored 14 points for the Timberwolves, while Devon Hillstrom pumped in 12.
AASU outshot the Timberwolves, 46 percent to 35 percent, as both teams made exactly 33 percent of their three-pointers (4-of-12). The Lady Pirates held a slight rebounding edge, 39-35, led by Masons seven off the bench. Nyquist was the leading rebounder in the game for Northwood with eight.
The Lady Pirates next travel to Morris College on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. to face the Hornets, while Northwood next faces SCAD on Sunday in Savannah at 2:00 p.m.
