Women's College Basketball: AASU 74, No. 18 Shaw 59

SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s basketball squad drilled 12 three-pointers and forced 28 turnovers in picking up a 74-59 victory over No. 18-ranked Shaw on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The victory gives head coach Roger Hodge at least one win over a nationally-ranked team in seven consecutive seasons.

Shaw (2-2) set the tempo early by hitting three three-pointers en route to a 9-2 lead, but five three pointers by the Lady Pirates (3-0) contributed to a 30-6 run that put AASU up by 17 points, 23-15, with 6:21 left until halftime. Senior Sarah Brown hit 4-of-5 first-half three-pointers for 12 points, while junior Tana Griffiths nailed 3-of-5 three-pointers en route to 13 first-half points as AASU took a 36-27 lead into intermission.

After the break, Shaw rallied to cut the lead to four, 52-48, with 9:42 left, but that was as close as the Lady Bears would get. AASU forced five consecutive turnovers in a two-minute stretch to expand the lead back to double digits and cruise to the 15-point win.

Griffiths finished with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting from three-point range, while junior Kaneetha Gordon added another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Shaw was led by Mandakokva Clark’s 11 points.

The 12 three-pointers made by the Lady Pirates were the most since Feb. 16, 2005, when AASU hit 12 threes in a 92-81 loss at GCSU.

AASU returns to action on Tuesday, November 28, as the Lady Pirates visit Florida Tech for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference matchup in Melbourne, Fla.
