Women's College Basketball: Augusta State 67, AASU 64 (OT)

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Host Augusta State edged Armstrong Atlantic State, 67-64, in an overtime Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Armstrong Atlantic State on Wednesday evening.

The Lady Pirates (10-10, 4-5 PBC) erased a six-point deficit in the final two and a half minutes to force overtime. Tana Griffiths scored seven straight points, her last two coming on a layup with 26.5 seconds remaining to make the score 60-58. After a missed free throw by the Lady Jaguars' Shirrell Ford, Jasmine Herron went to the line and made two free throws with 10.1 seconds left to tie the score. Tracey Paschal missed a layup try at the buzzer for ASU, sending the game into an extra frame.

In overtime, neither team found the scoring column for the first two minutes, but baskets by Alla Batovska and Pascal put the Lady Jaguars (13-6, 5-4 PBC) up three, 64-61, with 1:03 left. Shirrell Ford hit one of two free throws for the Jaguars, but Nicole Hornage's first three of the game cut the lead to one, 65-64, with 29.8 seconds left. A turnover gave the Lady Pirates the ball with 17.6 seconds left, but Jasmine Herron's one-handed shot in the lane with one seconds left would not fall for AASU. Ford's two free throws capped the scoring for the Lady Jaguars.

Griffiths finished with 18 points on the night to lead the Lady Pirates, while Kaneetha Gordon added her sixth straight double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Brittany Jarrard's season-high 20 points off the bench led the Lady Jaguars, while Ford finished with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams entered halftime tied at 28-all after Jarrard hit a three-pointer as the first half clock expired. The Lady Pirates forced 15 turnovers by the Lady Jaguars in the first half, which helped offset the 5-of-7 threes made by Augusta State before intermission.

The Lady Pirates return to action on Saturday, February 3, as they visit USC Aiken for a 5:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest.
