Soccer (7-1-1 Overall, 3-0-1 Peach Belt Conference, No. 8 NSCAA DII Top 25)
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer squad picked up a pair of shutout wins on the week to improve to 7-1-1 overall on the season, stretching the Pirates’ unbeaten streak to eight. AASU also ascended to No. 8 in the latest NSCAA Division II Top 25 rankings.
The Pirates traveled to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens University. Sophomore Kristin Burton scored twice in a seven minute span in the first half to put the Pirates up, 2-0, and the Pirates held on for the shutout win. Senior Tarra Kohler made two saves in goal for the shutout win as Burton tallied her 10th career multi-goal match.
AASU hosted PBC foe GCSU on Saturday in a tight defensive battle. The scoreless tie was broken by Burton, who headed a free kick from Carey Patterson into the net for the only goal of the match. Freshman Tracey Mitchell made two saves in goal, taking over for Kohler, who broke her leg in practice on Friday.
The Pirates are now 7-0 when Burton, the PBC’s leading goal scorer, scores first in a match and 13-0 over two seasons when the reigning league Player of the Year tallies the first score.
This week, the Pirates travel to No. 17 Columbus State for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Cougars on Wednesday, October 3. AASU then returns home on Saturday, October 6, for a key region match with Newberry at 3:00 p.m.
Volleyball (9-14 Overall, 3-1 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team won two road Peach Belt Conference matches on the week to improve to 3-1 in the league and 9-14 overall.
The Pirates dropped the first two games at Francis Marion on Friday evening, but rallied to win in five games, 25-30, 28-30, 32-30, 30-26, 15-13. Sophomore Gwen Clarke notched a career-high 20 kills in the match as the Pirates won their first road match of the season.
AASU then traveled to UNC Pembroke and knocked off the Braves in three games, 31-29, 30-22, 30-19. Senior Stacia McCoy recorded a career-high 10 kills and hit .333 in the win.
After dropping their first PBC match, the Pirates have now won three straight league matches heading into Saturday’s showdown with preseason league favorite USC Aiken. The Pirates have won five out of their last six and one big reason has been the play of junior Allyson Ray, who is averaging 3.17 kills and hitting .376 during the stretch.
This week, the Pirates host the preseason PBC favorite Pacers on Saturday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m.
Women’s Golf
The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s golf team returns to action after a week off by traveling to the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., to participate in the Flagler College Slam. Seniors Katherine Hooks and Kristen Graham join freshmen Kristen Jelinek and Carrie George as well as junior Courtney Sanders in the lineup this week for head coach Michael Butler.
Men’s Golf (No. 6, GCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll)
The No. 6-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men’s golf team finished tied for seventh at the Coker College Invitational at the Orange County National course in Orlando.
Junior Chris Wolfe fired rounds of 68 and 66 to capture his fifth collegiate tournament with a 10-under-par 134 total. Wolfe tied with St. Edwards’ Matt Smith, and no playoff was contested, giving Wolfe two tournament wins in his first two events of the season.
Daniel Mobley fired rounds of 70 and 74 to finish tied for 24th with an even-par 144 score, while Mitch Baxley carded rounds of 79 and 70 to tie for 58th with a five-over-par 149 total. Justin Smith (75-76=151) tied for 74th, while Tanner Farr (79-75=154) tied for 86th to round out the Pirates’ scoring.
The Pirates return to action at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational on Monday, October 1 at the Bull Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ga.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis
The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up action in the ITA Mid-Atlantic Regional early in the week by capturing the singles titles in both the men’s and women’s brackets.
Senior Robert Jendelund defeated teammate Christian Bergh with a 6-2, 6-1 win to capture the men’s singles title. On the women’s side, top seed Johanna Dahlback defeated teammate Alida Muller-Wehlau, 6-4, 6-1, to capture the women’s singles title.
Both Jendelund and Dahlback will now travel to Mobile, Ala., on October 11-14 to compete in the DII draws against the winners from the other seven regions across the country. Each division winner will then compete in the Super Bowl against winners from Division III, NAIA and Junior College.
The rest of the Lady Pirates competed over the weekend in the GCSU Fall Championships. Muller-Wehlau rebounded to capture the “A” singles bracket with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Monika Lalewicz of Abraham Baldwin, then she teamed with Martina Beckmann to capture the “A” doubles bracket with an 8-4 win over Lalewicz and Makagala of ABAC.
