Cross Country
Behind junior Nikki Garland's dominating individual performance, the No. 25-ranked AASU women's cross country team captured the Gate/Georgia Southern Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning in Statesboro, Ga.
Garland finished the 5,000 meter course in a time of 17:28, a minute and a half earlier than the rest of the pack. The September cross country women's runner of the month in the Southeast Region, Garland picked up her fourth individual win of the season and has finished no worse than second in any of her races this year. Sophomore Melanie Clarke finished third in a time of 19:28.05, while freshman Jillian Charles finished ninth in a time of 19:53.79. Junior Amanda Legesse (14th, 20:20.42) and senior Katie Graham (18th, 20:52.01) helped the Pirates to 44 points to finish ahead of UNC Greensboro, Valdosta State, Georgia Southern, Mercer and Savannah State.
The men finished second behind team champion UNC Greensboro, but freshman Paul McRae also won his fourth race of the year, finishing the 8,000 meter course in a time of 24:54.89. Senior Gary Ginn finished fourth in a time of 26:01.95, followed by junior Robert Crenshaw (7th, 26:35.11), senior Tony Menendez (9th, 26:58.13) and freshman Drew Korenvaes (23rd, 29:28.55).
The Pirate cross country teams now take a week off before competing at the PBAC Championships in Lumberton, N.C., on Sat., Oct. 23.
Volleyball (26-0 overall, 3-0 PBAC)
The AASU volleyball squad defeated Barton College, 15-6, 15-5, 15-10, to capture the Sixth Annual Fayetteville State University Invitational Tournament title on Saturday afternoon at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C.
Armstrong Atlantic State improved to a perfect 26-0 on the season with three wins on the day, including the tournament championship match. In earlier pool play, the Pirates defeated St. Augustine's, 15-1, 15-6, 15-6, and Benedict, 15-1, 15-2, 15-5, on Saturday, AASU opened the tournamnent with 15-11, 15-3, 15-9 win over NC Central and a 15-11, 15-5, 15-8 win over Mount Olive.
Sophomore middle hitter Kris Bringewatt was named the Tournament MVP, while junior setter Colleen Fitzsimmons was also named to the All-Tournament team. AASU Head Coach Alan Segal was awarded the Most Outstanding Coach honor for the tournament as well.
The Pirates return to Peach Belt Athletic Conference play this Wednesday as they travel to Augusta State on Oct. 13 for a 7 p.m. showdown. AASU's next home match will be Saturday, Oct. 16, at 4 p.m. against USC Aiken at the ARC.
Men's and Women's Tennis
Junior Maren Muller won the consolation singles brackets of flight A at the Georgia College & State Fall Tournament over the weekend. Muller defeated Rollins College's Camila Romulo, 8-6, in the final.
Mueller and Michaela Kratochvilova advanced to the doubles finals, but rain forced the cancellation of the doubles bracket on Sunday.
The men's and women's tennis teams will compete at the Charleston Southern Classic on Fri., Oct. 15 and Sat., Oct. 16 in Charleston, S.C.
