Soccer (10-2-1 Overall, 4-1-1 Peach Belt Conference, No. 14 NSCAA DII Top 25)
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer squad picked up a pair of shutout wins on the week, knocking off Flagler, 5-0, and USC Aiken, 2-0.
The Pirates hosted the Saints on Wednesday and got two first-half goals from Kristin Burton and goals from Maggie Kennedy, Brittany Carr and Lyndsi Stricklen in the win. AASU is now 5-0 at home and has outscored its opponents 21-0 at AT&T Field.
AASU then traveled to USC Aiken on Friday night and, after a scoreless first half, got goals from Jamie Craine and Lyndsi Stricklen to pick up the 2-0 win, AASU’s third straight shutout and sixth in its last seven matches. Tracey Mitchell made five saves in goal for the Pirates.
The Pirates host Tusculum on Monday afternoon in a key Southeast region matchup, then travel to North Georgia on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with the Saints.
Volleyball (13-16 Overall, 3-2 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team went 4-1 in non-conference play on the week, improving to 13-16 on the year.
AASU hosted Flagler on Wednesday and outlasted the Saints, winning in five games. Brendyce Budd notched 17 kills and 15 digs, while Hannah Segebart notched 64 assists, the most for the Pirates in a match since 2003.
The Pirates then traveled to Montevallo for the Montevallo Coca-Cola Classic. AASU defeated Fort Valley State and Clark Atlanta by 3-0 scores on Friday, then split matches on Saturday, losing 3-0 to West Alabama but defeating host Montevallo in five games. With the score tied at 12-all in game five, junior Antje Reuleke served out three straight points to give AASU the win.
The Pirates have now won three straight five-game matches after starting out the year losing four of its first five five-game matches. AASU returns to PBC play this week, hosting its final home matches of the season on Wednesday against Francis Marion and Friday against UNC Pembroke.
Women’s Golf
The short-handed Armstrong Atlantic State women's golf team shot rounds of 341 and 358 to finish 13th at the LRC/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.
The Lady Pirates had to compete with just four players as freshman Carrie George suffered an injury on Monday and could not complete her rounds.
Senior Katherine Hooks shot 77-87 to finish the tournament with a two-day 164 total, tied for 25th individually. Freshman Kristen Jelinek shot 79-88 and finished with a 167 total, tying for 33rd. Kristen Graham shot 89-95 and finished with a 168 total, tying for 68th. Courtney Sanders finished with the same total score as Graham after rounds of 96-88.
The Lady Pirates wrap up the fall season on Monday and Tuesday at the Nova Southeastern Fall Invitational in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Men’s Golf (No. 6, GCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll)
The No. 6-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team takes part in the Mizuno/Georgia Southern Invitational on Monday, October 15 and Tuesday, October 16, at Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah.
Junior Chris Wolfe will compete with Parker Gordon, Mitch Baxley, Tanner Farr and Justin Smith for the Pirates in the field, comprised of all Division I schools except for the Pirates.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis
Senior Johanna Dahlback defeated Monika Lalewicz of Abraham Baldwin, 6-3, 6-3, on Sunday morning to capture the 2007 ITA "Super Bowl" Of Small College Tennis singles title, becoming just the second Armstrong Atlantic State player in school history to accomplish the feat.
Dahlback advanced to the Super Bowl final after a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jackie Schtemberg of the College of New Jersey. She is just the second AASU player to capture the “Super Bowl” title, following in the footsteps of Zsofi Golopencza (2003).
The AASU men’s tennis team, meanwhile, took part in the South Carolina Fall Collegiates in Columbia, S.C.
Davor Zink won a pair of matches in the A-2 Singles Consolation bracket, defeating Michael Nicol of Presbyterian, 6-3, 6-0, and Matt Martin of Presbyterian, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Kevin Sijmons advanced to the quarterfinals of the A/B singles bracket, knocking off Patrick Fediuk of Presbyterian, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3, and David Mells of Coastal Carolina, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, before falling to Alex Petropolous of Auburn, 6-3, 6-1. Paul Bishop also advanced to the quarters, winning two matches in the A/B bracket, defeating Bradwin Williams of Arkansas, 7-6, 6-2, and Bernie Bachino of Jacksonville State, 6-4, 7-5.
Rafael Array and Paul Bishop advanced to the semifinals of the A-2 doubles bracket with an 8-1 win over Kenodle and Schecter of Wofford, 8-1, and an 8-4 win over David and Teraz of Charleston Southern, 8-4.
