Junior Nikki Garland was named the inaugural recipient of the Edward Jones Investments/AASU Blue Chip Athlete of the Month for September by AASU and Edward Jones Investments. Garland won four of six regular season races, finishing second in the other two, and helped

After a week off from competition, the Pirate cross country teams compete at the PBAC Championships in Lumberton, N.C., on Sat., Oct. 23.

Volleyball (29-0 overall, 6-0 PBAC)

The AASU volleyball squad swept three Peach Belt Athletic Conference matches over the week, defeating Augusta State in Augusta, 15-9, 16-14, 15-6, then knocking off USC Aiken, 15-1, 16-14, 15-9 and USC Spartanburg, 15-8, 15-12, 15-9 at home to remain perfect on the season at 29-0, 6-0 in the conference.

Freshman Lindsay Ehlers enjoyed a strong week, hitting .391 over the three matches, including 18 kills against Augusta State and 19 kills against USC Spartanburg.

The Pirates head to Florence, S.C., to face Francis Marion in a battle of PBAC unbeatens on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., then take on UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Oct. 23.

Men's and Women's Tennis

Maren Mueller and Michaela Kratochvilova advanced to the singles semifinals of the Charleston Southern/Low Country Orthopaedic Invitational before rain forced the cancellation of the rest of the event.

Mueller had defeated Coastal Carolina's L. Lendenmann 6-4, 6-4, and led Augusta State's V. Manicom in the first set before play was halted. Kratochvilova had defeated Winthrop's A. Rojas and was leading Coastal Carolina's E. Kidd in the first set as well.

Maren Mueller will represent the Pirates at the Rolex/ITA Fall Championships in Memphis, Tenn., on Thursday, Oct. 21. The AASU men's tennis team will compete at the South Carolina Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C., from Friday, Oct. 22 through Monday, Oct. 25.
